Who owns the "iPhone" name?

If you guessed Apple, you would be wrong. "iPhone" is a registered trademark of Cisco. This means that apple is having to pay Cisco for the right to use the name "iPhone".

Why would Cisco own a trademark to the name? Simply because in December their Linksys devision launched a group of IP-Telephony products for use with Skype under that brand name. Apparently Cisco purchased a company that registered that trademark back in 1999. So every iPhone sold royalties go to Cisco.

John's Gravatar My guess is that Apple and Cingular will buy the rights to the name outright versus paying an ongoing royalty fee. I think there was something online yesterday from Cisco saying something to the effect of "we're working with Apple to figure it out".
