is the iPhone the biggest waste of money?

Ok, I admit the iPhone is a cool piece of technology, but for the price it isn't worth it. Seriously, $500 for a 4gb cell phone and $600 for an 8gb version? When they started talking about this I was sure that they would try to bring about an evolution by making the price on this close to $100. They would have cornered the market at $100 for something like this. As it is for the price and the memory you get, it is far from a good value. I might consider paying $500 for it if it was built on the video iPod platform with a 60 or 80gb hd, but never for a 4gb flash drive. Get real Apple and make products affordable for everyone, $500 for a phone isn't realistic.

JesterXL's Gravatar Most consumers will pay far less than that. You can get a $400 phone from Verizon from $60; all you have to do is sign on the dotted line. A lot of US providers make their dough from contracts (2 years), and take a loss on the phone to get you locked into their service. The iPhone is no different since they are going through Cingular.

...which brings up the interesting point; can you buy an unlocked iPhone?

Jeff's Gravatar If they do discount it for contracts, that will be great. I haven't heard any information on that though. As far as an unlocked phone, any idea if it uses a sim card?

John Wilker's Gravatar Actually they said in the keynote, that was the price with contract.

Plus look at the price of the latest treo, the latest crackberry, the latest Q and blackjack.

Yeah it's more than a razor, but it's MORE than a Razer :)

In that light it's only slightly more spendy than the competition, which is par for the course for Apple tech.

flashape's Gravatar i think they are taking the route that this isn't just a phone. It's an ipod, phone, and handheld in one. From what we've seen of it so far it outshines all the other 'smartphones' like the ones already mentioned, by far, and it's only slightly more than the cost of one of those.

Steven's Gravatar Waste of money? Barely. What current smart phone retails for anywhere near $100? Look at it in terms of it's components: an 8 gig Nano retails for $250. A fully touch screen phone w/o any hardware? AFAIK that isn't even on the market so you can't expect that part to be cheap. Then throw in EVERYTHING else Apple is doing with it. $600 is a pleasant surprise for me - I was expecting a higher price tag.

Mitch's Gravatar And everyone said nobody would pay $399 for an ipod in the first place! Ha, Steve is one smart dude and people will be pushing each other out of the way to get in line for these. Long live the newton :)

Jeff's Gravatar I just think that the price could have been lower. If they would have lowered the price they would have sold like hotcakes. I know that the iPhone has a lot more to offer than most smart phones, but there are many that are around $100 with contract. I just checked t-mobile's website, this is what I found. For $99 you can get a BlackBerry 7290 or a BlackBerry 7105t. For $149 you can get the T-Mobile SDA. For $199 you can get the BlackBerry Pearl, T-Mobile Sidekick 3, or the T-Mobile Dash. And for $249 you can get the BlackBerry 8700g or the T-Mobile MDA.

This means that there are a TON of smart phones out there that are much cheaper than the iPhone. I think that Apple could have done better on the price.

Jeff's Gravatar Sorry, meant to put the link to the tmobile page as well:

John Wilker's Gravatar It's apple :)

There were and are cheaper DAPs than the iPod, cheaper laptops than the MacBook Pro, cheaper towers than the Mac Pro, and cheaper servers than the Xserve...

A friend pointed out, the hardware costs more in general because the software, not only rocks, but is usually less expensive.

Plus with the exception of the Pearl, most of those models are a year or more old.

I do agree it could be cheaper, always. It's Apple, they're never the loss leader LOL

black rose's Gravatar well i think th iphone s a waste of money in the uk with £500 you could buy a sony ericsson phone (on contract it's free like most phones) a memory card for the phone and an ipod (probably eith a 4gb or 8gb). But the thing is if having the ipod earphones is enough to get you mugged then imagine what would happen with the iphone.

Richard Neva's Gravatar Of course it's a waste of money. Most all folks talk about nothing anyway. Did you ever listen to
a conversation on a cell phone? Absurd is too kind a word for it. Now it has all the other crap you
don't need too. I would cancel my phone in my home if I would not lose my dial up Internet
connection. Then again, I think I will call my phone company and see if I can cancel my phone. It
is useless to me anyway.

Richard Neva's Gravatar I am getting closer to canceling my phone at home. Since the government is working diligently to destroy the Internet I will be able to cancel my phone and Internet connection when my server Frontier complies with the fascist rulers in Washington. Then I can cancel both the Internet and the phone for breach of contract. Good deal.
