New "Terminator" Trilogy Planned

"After much talk and posturing over the future of "The Terminator" franchise in recent years, something surprising has happened - producers Mario Kassar and Andy Vajna have given up their baby.

The Halcyon Co. has acquired the franchise rights to the popular 'The Terminator' movie series and intend to make a new trilogy that would anchor their movie company.

'Terminator 4' will be based on a script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris ('Terminator 3'), and Halcyon plans to immediately begin preproduction on the film with the hope of a Summer 2009 release.

Neither creator James Cameron or original star Arnold Schwarzenegger will be involved in the project, which picks up with John Connor in his 30s leading what's left of the human race against the machines. The deal includes the right to produce any future "Terminator" projects in any format (film, TV, etc.). It also includes all future merchandising and licensing rights, and certain rights to the upcoming TV series 'The Sarah Connor Chronicles.'"

Ben Nadel's Gravatar As a HUGE fan of the Terminator series (Judgement Day in particular), this both excites and saddens me. On the one hand, I want to see more of it. But, on the other hand, how can it possibly live up to the earlier films and the larger-than-life Arnold Schwarzenegger?

I do love a good post-apocalyptic movie and will probably see it no matter what. I just have to do in with the mind set that it is *not* going to be the same movie.

charlie griefer's Gravatar ben:

the franchise can work without schww..shewar...schwarrt...arnold.

dark horse comics used to own the license to the terminator, and put out a slew of quality mini-series based on the franchise.

if you're really a fan of the concept, i'd highly suggest you check some of them out. it's been a while since i've looked at them, but i remember "terminator: secondary objectives" being a good one.

"terminator: end game" was another decent one.

if you come across Superman vs. Terminator, skip it. it was bad :)

charlie griefer's Gravatar actually here are better links (and most of these series didn't feature any terminators with likenesses to arnold... which is why i say the franchise can stand on its own) :)

jeff's Gravatar I agree. The franchise can live completely well without Arnold and in some respects I think it could do a lot better now without him.

Shawn Knight's Gravatar Hrm, I'm not so sure I like this idea. T3 was a big letdown IMO. T2 is still one of my favorite movies of all-time. Some things are better left alone in their prime, rather than dragging it out and ruining the overall concept...
