The last event of A Light Weave is The Fifth AX (of Saturnalian Follies and Winter’s Tales) by Division4habitats. It will transform the Glazen Huis in the Amstelpark (Amsterdam) into a huge light box, created by an ensemble of artists for the traditional period of Saturnalia. It lasts from the outset of Saturnalia Sunday, December 17 to the ‘cleaning up’ of the Lord of Misrule on Sunday, January 7.
Saturnalia
The saturnalia1, named by Caesar after and in honor of Saturnus, was a feast of the solstice on December 21st. It’s the Roman version of Christmas. People gave each other candles, puppets made of soil and masks, and masters served their slaves to thank them for their services. Although several date are mentioned, people couldn’t track down the first time this festivity took place in archaïc times, nor agreed on the length of the feast, which varied from one to seven days. It was it was strictly forbidden to start a war on the feast of Saturnus.

Het laatste event van A Light Weave is The Fifth AX (of Saturnalian Follies and Winter’s Tales), een installatie gepresenteerd van zondag 17 december 2017 tot 7 januari 2018.
Zichtbaar vanaf de buitenkant wordt het Glazen Huis (Amstelpark, Amsterdam) in een gigantische lichtbox gecreëerd door een samenwerking van kunstenaars. Het duurt vanaf de aanvang van de Saturnalia op 17 december tot het ‘opruimen’ van de Lord of Misrulen op 7 Januari.
De saturnaliën1 (Latijn: Saturnalia) was de naam die de Romeinen gaven aan de feestdag op de zonnewende van 21 december ieder jaar. Het is de Romeinse voorloper van ons kerstfeest. Men gaf elkaar kaarsen, aarde poppen en maskers, en slaven werden door hun heren bedient uit dank voor het geleverde werk. Ook was het streng verboden om op de feestdag van Saturnus een oorlog te beginnen. Ondanks de genoemde data weet men niet wanneer het feest voor het eerst plaatvond, en gedurende de geschiedenis werd het feest variërend van één tot zeven dagen gevierd.
